On Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, as it is on other regional national wildlife refuges and across North America in general, Red-tailed Hawks are some of the most commonly seen hawks. They scour fields from many perches including fence posts, telephone poles and high trees. They also circle fields looking for their main diet of small mammals, other birds and even snakes.
