Mrs. Peggy Joyce Harrison Thompson, age 81, a resident of Washington, died Monday, April 1, 2019, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Washington officiated by Pastor Greg Barmer. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Harrison Jarvis, Logan Jarvis, Craig Mizell, Devin Davis, Matt Thompson, Jeff Jackson, Rick Cutchin and John Cutchin.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Newport News, Virginia, on Aug. 30, 1937, daughter of the late Julian David Harrison and Rebie Blythe Harrison, who survives. She graduated from Gramby High School in Norfolk, Virginia. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Old Dominion University and later completed her master’s degree in education at Wingate University. On July 7, 1956, she married Rev. Gary B. Thompson, Sr. who preceded her in death on July 14, 1989. Mrs. Thompson was a teacher, having worked in Virginia, Union County and Beaufort County School systems. She loved art classes, swimming and history. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington and was very active in their mission trips to Swaziland, Africa.

Surviving along with her mother, Rebie Harrison, of Cheraw, South Carolina, are her children, Gary B. Thompson, Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Washington, Denise T. Belote and her husband, Bryan, of Washington, and Jennifer T. Jarvis and her husband Chris, of Bath; a sister, Sue Cutchin of Cheraw, South Carolina; her grandchildren, Matt Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Jessica Mizell, Caroline Belote, Catherine Jackson, Hope Jarvis, Harrison Jarvis and Logan Jarvis; and six great-grandchildren.
