Copper Canyon to host first yoga teacher training

Warrior II, downward dog, plank, cobra, child’s — to some, they are words strung together with no connection. To others, the connection is as obvious as yoga poses flowing from one to the next, or vinyasa.

Copper Canyon Wellness offers 15 yoga classes a week, ranging from beginners’ workshops, where individual poses are taught with modifications and assistance, to vinyasa flow, a more rigorous practice for more experienced practitioners. To this schedule, owners Matt and Brandan Wilson are adding a class that will be the first of its kind in the area: a 200-hour teacher training for those who’d like to teach yoga or simply take their practice to the next level.

“It’s based off our desire to continue to grow the yoga community in Washington and the surrounding areas,” Matt Wilson said. “We believe a big part of it growing is to educate.”

The Wilsons are bringing in Sheryl Light and Tom Slatterly from Open Studio in Wilmington to teach the course one designated weekend a month for six months starting June 28. The weekend schedules are slated for 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

“That allows people who have regular work schedules and lives, it will allow them to come in and take these courses over six months,” Wilson said.

The Wilsons opened Copper Canyon Wellness in downtown Washington six months ago and have added a growing schedule of yoga classes, including Kripalu, a gentle vinyasa flow and the more meditative zen yoga, in addition to massage and esthetic services they offer.

Wilson said they’ll start with the 200-hour teacher training, but hope to expand to 300- and 500-hour programs in the future.

“We really wanted to see how many people would be interested in the 200-hour first,” Wilson said.

Quite a few, actually — shortly after they posted the teacher training course online, seven people had signed up, he said. The class will be capped off at 10 students.

“We’re seeing the desire out there,” Wilson said. “I think it’s just something that hasn’t been presented by anybody before, so we’re really excited about that.”
