Lurid Sedge in Bloom On The Refuge

Lurid or shallow sedge (Carex lurida) is a herbaceous wetland grass-like plant that is in bloom at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Sedges occur in open freshwater marshes and shorelines where sunlight illuminates the stand. Waterfowl habitat biologists manage impoundments specifically for sedges because they produce highly nutritious seed for waterfowl to eat in the fall.
