Janie Louise Singleton Leggett, lifelong resident of Beaufort County, passed away at her home in Pinetown, on May 14, 2019. She had recently celebrated her 96th birthday on May 4, and had greatly enjoyed seeing her four surviving children all together on Mother’s Day.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Bill Leggett; her son, Joseph Thomas Leggett; and her grandson, Jeremiah Leggett. She was the last surviving child of her parents, Thomas Singleton and Carrie Cutler Singleton. Her brothers were Walter, Charlie, Leon and Thomas (all Singleton). Her sisters were Margie Taylor, Pauline Cutler and Olive Godley.

Her surviving children are: Carolyn Leggett Carrow and her spouse, Kester Carrow, of Washington; Brenda Leggett van Baars and her spouse, Frans van Baars, of Wilson; Joan Leggett and her spouse, Sandy Hill, of Birmingham, Alabama; and Terry Leggett and his spouse, Gretta Leggett, of Pinetown.

Her surviving grandchildren are Ginger Carrow Thomas, Aaron Carrow, Jason Carrow, Carrie Wheatley, Shelby Sawyer and Ashley Williams. Her great-grandchildren are William Rushton, Ethan Carrow, Levi Carrow, Celeste Wheatley, Jaxsen Williams and Taylor Williams. Her one great-great grandchild is Kaden Rushton.

Louise, as she was known to friends and family, was a steadfast Christian who lived by her faith. She truly embraced life and faced all its difficulties with her trust in God and her gracious, gentle love for people. She loved children, and babies held a special place in her heart. She was a full-time mother and homemaker and seldom forgot to have a sense of gratitude for God’s blessings. Gardening was her passion, and she spent multiple blissful hours communing with nature and the God that she so dearly loved. Some of her youngest family members called her “Great Mama” which reflects what a fantastic representative of the “Greatest Generation” that she truly was.

She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, fellow church members and her community.

Louise has been a longtime member of Pinetown Church of Christ, and her funeral service will be held there at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. In addition, family will receive friends at Paul Funeral Home on Friday, May 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and at other times at her home on Long Ridge Road.

Aaron Carrow, Ethan Carrow, Jason Carrow, Jimmy Leggett, William Rushton, David Williams and Barry Woolard will serve as pallbearers. Ronald Carrow, Kent Gurganus, Clarence Tetterton and Fred Wilson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
