The Down East Seniors Club held its July 10 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Charles Smith led the meeting. Smith led the singing of the national anthem which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Bill Cheshire gave the invocation, and Ed Hamrick read factoids for the date in history. Fritz Tanner provided humor.

Tom Meeks introduced Scott Hall as the speaker. Hall works for the Army Corps of Engineers as a captain of dredge boats and construction boats. He lives here and works out of the Wilmington district office of the corps. Most of his work consists of dredging ocean inlets and lower river areas from Norfolk to Charleston. He works with a crew of seven on different dredge boats and construction boats. Some dredges pump sand to the side, others load hundreds of cubic yards of sand and transport it to other places. Construction boats are used to remove wrecks, trees and other large debris from the water. Their projects are financed by state or local governments and must be approved by a Corps of Engineers permitting office.

At the July 17 meeting, Stewart Rumley will present Bryant Buck, executive director of the Mideast Commission.

The Down East Seniors Club is a group of older men who meet Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. They enjoy fellowship and an interesting program. Guests are welcome.
