Mr. Harry Skinner Hodges, Jr., age 87, a former resident of Washington, died Monday, July 8, 2019, at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Fayetteville.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Dr. Robert Cayton. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Ned Kessing, Jonas Kessing, Don Waitley, Hunter Chambers, Johnny Matkins and Tom Grubb.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at Paul Funeral Home.

Mr. Hodges was born in Beaufort County in the Old Ford Community, on Sept. 5, 1931. He was the son of the late Harry Skinner Hodges, Sr. and Minnie Willard Hodges. Mr. Hodges was a graduate of N.C. State University and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired high school teacher and farmer and an avid gardener. Mr. Hodges was a member of First Christian Church in Washington.

On Sept. 4, 1954, he married the former Peggy Ryan, who preceded him in death, June 5, 2019.

Mr. Hodges is survived by his children, Debbie Waitley and husband Don. of Fayetteville, Mike Hodges and wife Julie Stone, of Apex, Kathy Kessing and husband Ned, of Apex; his grandchildren, Hunter Chambers and wife Brittany, of Holly Springs, Jennifer Kessing, of Chapel Hill, Jonas Kessing and wife Julia Abraham, of Asheville; his great-grandchild, Aiden Chambers, of Holly Springs; and his sisters, Mary Smith, of Chocowinity, Janet Alligood and husband Bobby, of Washington, and Evelyn Hill, of Greenville.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by a sister, Hope Taylor.
