You can’t telephone an otter. But on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge this American River Otter (Lutra canadensis lataxina) could be ringing one of the nearby romp (a name used to designate a group of otters). Otters can tread water and swim both backwards and forwards. They feed mainly on crayfish, crabs, amphibians and fish.
