Gladys D. Winstead

Mrs. Gladys Mae Dixon Winstead, age 97, a resident of Washington, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at River Trace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory and will be officiated by Tony Krantz. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Winstead was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 13, 1922, to the late James Hyman Dixon and Hattie Hill Dixon. In January 1943, she married John “Johnny” William Winstead Sr. who preceded her in death in 1995. She was a longtime member of Beaver Dam Church of Christ.

Survivors include three children, Nelda Murphy, of Parkville, Maryland, John Winstead Jr. and wife Rebecca, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Charles Winstead and wife Kim, of Winterville; eight grandchildren, Kym Murphy, Krista Jarvis, Mark Murphy, Trae Winstead, Nathan Winstead, Amber Winstead, Johnathan Winstead and wife Melissa, Patrick Winstead and wife Susan; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Respess, of Pantego, Dorcas Swain, of Virginia, Shirley Elks, of Chocowinity, and a sister-in-law, Eva Jean Dixon, of Chocowinity.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory.
