The Lindsay Warren bridge that carries U.S. 64 traffic over the Alligator River was closed about three hours on Mar. 11 after two 18-wheelers collided head-on near the Tyrrell County end about 9 a.m., the State Highway Patrol reports.

One of the big rigs drifted left of center, striking the oncoming truck, the Highway Patrol stated. Both drivers were hospitalized with what were thought to be minor injuries.

“It looked like a bomb” went off, a trooper said, judging from the debris and oil that spilled onto the two-lane roadway.

One driver will likely be charged with driving left of center, a trooper said.
