Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In observance of Memorial Day, the shelter will be closed Saturday and Monday.

The Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Control Facility/Beaufort County animal shelter is up and running Mondays through Fridays as normal, with the exception of the public coming into the building freely. As with all county facilities, we are accepting visitors for business by appointment only. Saturdays, the shelter will be closed unless an appointment is made before 5 p.m. Friday. Setting an appointment allows our employees to try to answer questions on the phone and screen citizens to make sure they are not experiencing any symptoms of sickness before they come to the shelter. For the shelter specifically, people may call and schedule an appointment to view animals for adoption. These visits will be limited to two people at a time to minimize exposure.

The shelter is located at 3931 U.S. Highway 264 East in Washington. Normal hours open to the public: Mondays through Fridays, by appointment only, 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, the shelter will be closed unless an appointment is made by 5 p.m. Friday.

At approximately 2 years old, Lucy, a large American shorthair tabby is very pretty all dressed up in her uniquely colored — champagne, buff, with light and dark gray — tabby striped coat. Friendly and very loving, Lucy, loves attention. She will be a wonderful and welcome addition in a good, loving forever home. For more about, Lucy, ID No. 0403, see Facebook’s Friends of Beaufort County Shelter Cats page. Pay her a visit; you’ll be glad you did. She is available at the shelter.

Listed as approximately 2 years old, Oscar, a medium-size, brown, American pit bull terrier mix is movie-star handsome. He’s a very active dog and he will do best with an active family who will give him plenty of regular exercise and play — in a fenced area or on a leash —include him in their activities, give him obedience training and, of course, a good forever home. For more about Oscar, ID No. 0407, visit Facebook’s ENC Shelter Dogs page. Come meet him; he’s available at the shelter.
