Mr. William Leroy Nichols, age 67, a resident of Mill Road, Washington, died Sunday, May 31, 2020, at his home.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2020, from the chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Steve Hill. Burial will follow in the Nichols family cemetery.

The following will serve as pallbearers: David Bell, Bob Shagena, Glen Moore, James Gregory Freeh, James Gregory Freeh II, Damon McCoury, Logan Nichols and Hunter Nichols.

Mr. Nichols was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 5, 1952. He was the son of the late Leroy Nichols and Erna Joy Rowe Nichols. Mr. Nichols graduated from East Carolina University. He was a retired sportswriter for the Washington Daily News. He enjoyed board and video games. Mr. Nichols established the Carolina Game club in the 1980s. He enjoyed Detroit Tigers baseball, Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers football, UNC basketball, military history and watching John Wayne movies.

On July 23, 1992, he married Susan Young McCoury, who survives.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Melissa Ann Nichols, of Pinetown, Jessika McLemore, of Bath; son Damon Alexander McCoury Nichols and wife Rosa, of Washington; four grandchildren, Hailey Harris, Sarah Harris, Jaxson Foster, River James Payne; brother, Michael Nichols and wife Susan, of Washington; nephews, Logan and Hunter Nichols, both of Washington; and cousin, Kevin Reader, of Little Rock, Arkansas.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Joy Nichols.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
