Alfred Gray Matthews, 74, of Smith Road, Roper, died Sunday, July 12, 2020, at Roanoke Landing Nursing Home.

Mr. Matthews was born in Martin County on Oct. 30, 1945, to the late Sam and Ellen Edmondson Matthews. He did construction with Weyerhaeuser and was a U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed fishing. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters Molly Matthews and Nancy Matthews.

A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Gardens in Plymouth, with Pastor Jonathan Knox officiating.

Survivors include: sister, Ann Comstock (James), of Roper; brother, Donald Matthews (Karen), of Wachapreaggue, Virginia; niece, Nancy Copper (Joe), of Belhaven; great-niece, Molly Cooper, of Belhaven, and children Abby, Austin, Brandon, Cherrianne and Christopher; nephews, Donnie Edwards and Gary Matthews.
