Mrs. Mary Leigh Branch Civils Hawthorne, age 84, a former resident of Surf City, died Friday, March 12, 2021 at Woodbury Wellness in Hampstead, N.C.

A private graveside service will be held.

Mrs. Hawthorne was born in Ayden, N.C. on May 31, 1936. She was the daughter of the late John Quincy Branch and Sally Denby Branch.  Mrs. Hawthorne was the retired owner and operator of Onslow Optical.  She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Holly Ridge.  

Mrs. Hawthorne was married to Robert Martin Hawthorne, who survives.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Ronnie Civils and wife, Candace of Jacksonville, Jason Civils of Wilmington; stepson, Michael Hawthorne of Hampstead; four grandchildren, Alex, Meredith, Morgan, and Mason Civils; one great grandchild; two brothers, Douglas and George Branch; and sister, Lois Branch Morgan.
