Beaufort County Schools’ child nutrition staff is making sure students will have enough to eat when spring break starts next week.
On Thursday, staff members distributed approximately 780 preordered food boxes to families around the district. Each box included a 10-day supply of breakfasts and lunches for one child.
BCS School Nutrition Director Joanne Kirven called the food box distribution initiative a “very successful outreach effort.” She said the district doesn’t usually offer spring break meal boxes, but factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic made the service necessary to implement this year.
Families could pick up their food boxes at one of 12 different sites. Most of those sites were schools that the district already uses for regular meal distributions. The non-school locations were River Road Estates, Pinetown Fire Station, Elizabeth Chapel Church of Christ in Blounts Creek and The Market in Belhaven.
