Panthers, Seahawks send 24 athletes to 1A state track meet

It was productive Saturday in Pender County for the Northside and Southside boys and girls track and field teams at the 1A East regional meet.
Each school qualified 12 athletes, seven boys and five girls, for Friday’s state meet at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.
The top four finishers in each event advanced to the state meet.
Northside senior Kat Slade won the high jump with a leap of 5’0. Fellow senior Caroline Boyd was second in the 1600 meters and was part of the second place 4 x 400 relay team with freshmen Anna Taylor, Lauren Rouse and Kiele Scott, who also qualified fourth in the 300 Hurdles.
Sophomore Ka’Nyah O’Neal led the Seahawks girls with a third place finish in the 300 Hurdles.
The 4 x100 relay team of seniors Chelsea Hemby, LaQuisha Woolard, Tajhe’ Speller and Tyanna Tyre qualified fourth.
Pamlico County won the team title at the girls meet. Northside was eighth and Southside ninth.
Lejeune won the boys title with the Seahawks fourth and the Panthers seventh.
Individually, junior Victor Gonzalez led Southside with a second place finish in the 200 meters and was part of the fourth place 4 x200 relay team with freshman Tequon Moore, junior Hunter Leary and freshman Darren Joyner, who also qualified third in the High Jump.
Junior Brandon Clark was third in the triple jump, while senior Nic Crawford was third in the 110 & 300 Hurdles.
Senior Jaquan Cobb took fourth in the 100 meters and was part of the fourth place 4 x 100 relay team with Moore, Leary and senior Kenjray Coffield.
Junior Keanu Dugan led Northside as part of the second-place 4 x 800 relay team with sophomore Jonathan Price, freshman Mason Newman and junior Brent Holland.
Dugan finished third in the 1600 meters and was part of the fourth place 4 400 relay team with Price, Holland and sophomore Jordan Harding.
Sophomore Zane Brooks was second in the 300 Hurdles and fourth in the 110 Hurdles.
Senior Zion Wilson qualified fourth in the shot put.
