Mrs. Dorothy Sadler Sparrow, age 99, a resident of 1895 Woodstock Road, Belhaven, died Friday, July 2, 2021 unexpectedly at her home.
A graveside service was held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Winsteadville Community Cemetery, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Winsteadville, conducted by Pastor Linda Rowe. Her grandchildren, Janet Braddy, Kevin Braddy, George Sparrow, Jr., Tracey Council, Howell S. Sparrow III and great nephew, Clay Smith served as pallbearers.
Ms. Dorothy was born in Beaufort County on January 27, 1922. She was the daughter of the late George Washington Sadler and Nancy Elizabeth Moreslender and was a 1939 graduate of Belhaven High School. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Beaufort county. Ms. Dorothy was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Winsteadville Women’s Club. Her priorities were her faith in God, her husband and her children. She took care of all of them, faithfully and unending, as well as other family, friends and neighbors when the need arose. She enjoyed reading, quilting, cooking and baking, sharing the goodies she made and gardening. She was still gardening at age 99.
On November 5, 1943, she married Howell Swindell Sparrow, who preceded her in death, March 16, 2002.
Mrs. Sparrow is survived by sons, Howell S. Sparrow, Jr. and Jacklyn, George S. Sparrow, Sr. and Linda, and a daughter, Sarah S. Braddy and Melvin all of Winsteadville; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Seth Sparrow on February 10, 2011; and siblings, Ora Goldie, George Herman, Iredell, Gentry Sarah, George Carrol, Julian, Edna Jane, Alton, Durwood, Emma and Lula. Ms. Dorothy was the youngest of twelve.
The family received friends following the service and other times at her daughter’s home.
