Beaufort County native LeRae Sikes Umfleet, the author of “A Day of Blood: The 1908 Wilmington Race Riot,” lectured a crowd of about 40 people and signed copies of her book while visiting Pamlico Books in downtown Washington on Thursday.
The City of Washington’s Human Relations Council held the event in observance of Black History Month. The HRC’s goal is to “facilitate the prevention and/or resolution of problems in areas affecting the human relations of all citizens residing, working or trading in Washington/Beaufort County.”
During the presentation, Washington Noon Rotary Club awarded a $2,000 grant to the P.S. Jones Museum of African-American Education.
