WASHINGTON – The team at the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center has been recognized as “Advance Care Planning Champions” for taking the initiative to have all of their team members and providers educated in the advance care planning process.
“In addition to this being an important personal achievement for each team member, this experience also prepares the team to better support their patients and families with their advanced care planning needs,” said Mary Lou Infinito, Vidant Health’s Advance Care Planning Coordinator. Advance care planning is a process that helps individuals decide what they would want and not want if they have a health crisis and are not able to communicate for themselves.
April 16 is National Healthcare Decisions Day, a day focused to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers regarding the importance of advance care planning. It is also an initiative to encourage patients to express their wishes regarding healthcare and for providers and facilities to respect those wishes.
The team at the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center in Washington recognizes the value of this challenging and sometimes sensitive conversation. This team decided it was important that every team member have the information and education to be able to support their patients and families and help them navigate advance care planning.
