Rev. Dr. Robert Burns Cayton, age 71, a resident of Tunstall Swamp Road, Aurora, passed away Sunday May 8, 2022 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday May 11, 2022 at Kitt Swamp Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and will be officiated by Rev. Mike Scott, Rev. Riley Greene, and Rev. Valerie Melvin. Burial will follow in the Cayton Family Cemetery.

Rev. Cayton was born in Beaufort County on March 1, 1951 to the late Robert Browning Cayton and Rowena Hollowell Cayton.

Rev. Cayton was in the ministry for almost 51 years. During that time, he was very active in the local, district, regional, and general church. He served on committees, commissions, and elected offices for all four manifestations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States of America and Canada.

His calling was to preach the gospel and serve God’s people in the local church. He also felt called to serve in physical as well as spiritual areas. He was active in community and civic organizations. His involvement included education as trustee of Beaufort County Community College and Barton College, agriculture, transportation, rural health issues, and economic development.

He is survived by his wife Debra Rose, his two brothers, Darrell (Peggy) Cayton, Carl (Annette) Cayton and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday May 10, 2022 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
