Sophie Ann Mills Mitchell age 99, resident of Washington, N.C. died at her home on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

A celebration of her life will be held 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 15™ at the First Christian Church, Third Street in Washington and will be officiated by Gillian L. Pollock Family visitation will start at 10:00 AM

Sophie was born in Chowan County near Edenton, N.C. on April 6, 1923, to Walter Allen Mills and Eula Dean Hudson Mills. She grew up on North Broad St and graduated from John A Holmes High School in 1940. In 1941, Sophie entered the Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, N.C. The school was basically taught by the Tayloe doctors and prepared the students for the state board of examinations and the valued degree as a registered nurse. She worked as a floor nurse and later as an office nurse for Dr. E. W. Larkin for over thirty years, until they retired. Sophie met and married Earl Herbin Mitchell on February 12, 1944. Together, they went on to parent three children.

Sophie is predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Robert, Lloyd and Edmund, her husband Earl, her daughter Emily and son-in-law Ken Steiner. She is survived by her daughter Lilly Dudley and husband Stuart of Washington and son Earl Herbin Mitchell Jr. and wife Patricia of Pensacola, Fla., eight grandchildren, Shannon Boulware, Allison Mordecai, Stuart Dudley Jr., Lee Steiner, Kemily Wilson, Lana Holmes, Celeste Reeves and Chelsey Edgerly. Sophie was the proud great grandmother of nineteen. She is survived by beloved nieces and nephews and a huge extended family.

Sophie was truly a one of a kind. She never met a stranger and never forgot anyone that she met. In fact, she made it a priority to interview everyone that she came in contact with to establish a relationship. A true people person, Sophie enjoyed group travel from coast to coast nearly every state and Alaska and Hawaii several time. She made trips as long as she could board a bus, a car, a plane or a boat.

Sophie was active in the First Christian Church of Washington as well as the ladies church circles. The Red Hat, the Eastern Star, the North Carolina Grange, Washington Garden Club, and the Pamlico Quilter’s Guild. She tried her hand at basket weaving, art classes and gardening. Sophie was an accomplished hand quilter, crocheter and knitter.

Following a debilitating stroke in 2019, this active lady adjusted to a life at her home with the world’s best care. She loved her home, HER things and mostly her caregivers Shunica, Angie, Sherry and Cassie. She enjoyed visits from her devoted friends, talking with her precious Herb, daily and visits from Lilly and Allison.

Sophie had a great and full life. She was loved and will be missed by many. When talking about death, she said that she was not ready for fear of missing something.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to the Community Home Care & Hospice, Washington, N.C. or the First Christian Church of Washington.
