The Down East Seniors Club held their Nov. 9 meeting at the Blind
Center of NC in Washington. President Roy Whichard led the meeting.
Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and the
group pledged allegiance to the flag. Charles Smith gave the opening
prayer and Hackney provided factoids for the date in history.
Whichard announced that the club would not meet November 23, the day
before Thanksgiving.
Whichard introduced Amy Brewer as the speaker. Brewer is Executive
Hospice Care Consultant with Community Home Care & Hospice in
Washington. She said for a patient to qualify for hospice care they
must be diagnosed to have a terminal illness and have the request for
hospice care be made by a doctor. Hospice care may be provided at
home, at a nursing home, or in a hospital. A nurse would come at least
twice a week to make medical checks on the patient. An aide, a
chaplain, or a medical social worker could also come as needed.
Generally Medicare pays for this service.
Polk Culpepper won the 50/50 drawing.
Next week’s program will be provided by Bobby Roberson.
The Down East Seniors Club is a group of older men in the Washington
area who meet for fellowship and an interesting program Wednesdays
from 10:00 to 11:00 and make contributions to local charities.
