WHS swimmers compete in New Bern

The Washington High School boys swim team finished third and the girls were fifth in Wednesday’s meet hosted by New Bern High School.

D.H. Conley won the seven-team girls meet, while the hosts won the boys event with Conley second.

Senior John Hinchey finished in a dead heat for first place with a Swansboro swimmer in the 100 breaststroke. Both touched the wall in 1:11.44 and spit the first and second place points.

Hinchey was third in the 500 freestyle in 5:53.61 and was part of the second-place 200 medley (1:56.58) and 200 freestyle relays (1:45.65) with Cayden Pake, Evan Makepeace and Austin Waters. The quartet finished less than one second behind New Bern in the 200 medley.

Pake took fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:13.74 and seventh in the 100 breaststroke, Makepeace was fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.75) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:12.03), while Waters was sixth in the 50 freestyle (26.87) and in the 100 freestyle (1:03.61).

Elsewhere, Victor Hill was second in the 100 backstroke (1:25.70) and ninth in 100 freestyle (1:05.41).

Wayland Mitchell finished sixth in the backstroke (1:31.01), Miller Spruill was eighth and Luke Brown 10th in the 50 freestyle and Connor Lewis was 10th in the 100 freestyle.

Southside swimmer Ty Cole was second in the 100 freestyle (56.5) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.33)

On the girls side, freshman Aubrey Woolard finished second in the 50 freestyle (26.3) and was part of the third place 400 freestyle relay team with Ana Roberson, Elena Hill and Lydia Smith (4:53.98). Woolard teamed with Hill, Smith and Emma Orr to finish fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:29.89).

Smith was sixth in the 50 freestyle and 10th in the 100 breaststroke, senior Lilly Davis was 10th in the 100 backstroke and part of the seventh place 200 freestyle relay with Roberson, Orr and Mary Paige Moore. Hill finished seventh in the 200 freestyle.

Southside’s Delta Cole finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.30) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:14.67).
