School system employee arrested for threat of mass violence

Joshua Michael Boyd, age 39, of Gilbert Lane in Washington has been charged with one count of Felony Communicating a Threat of Mass Violence on Educational Property, NC G.S. 14-277.6.

On March 30, 2023 at approximately 2330 hrs, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a threat against Beaufort County Schools Transportation Department employees. The threat was made to a third party via text message.

Deputies responded and began an investigation. The Sheriff’s Office immediately notified Beaufort County Schools Assistant Superintendent regarding the threat. Beaufort County Schools took immediate action by notifying the affected employees. No threats were directed to any student or school campus locations.

No one was injured  during the incident. The investigation revealed that this incident was isolated in nature.

Boyd was taken into custody by Beaufort County Sheriff’s Deputies and held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond set by a Beaufort County Magistrate.
