Easter Break may be over but the Lady Raiders win streak is not after Pungo Christian Academy took down Lawrence Academy 9 – 4 Monday in Merry Hill. It was a scoreless game through three innings before the Pungo bats heated up for five runs in the fourth inning. The Raiders added to their lead in the top of the 7th with four more runs. The Warriors answered with four in the bottom of the 7th, but it was too little too late as PCA extended their winning streak to 11 games after a season-opening loss to at Halifax Academy. PCA (11-1) is ranked second behind Halifax in the NCISAA 1A state poll.
Melanie Rutledge sparked the Raider bats with two home runs. Ella Kate Hanna went 3-4 while Reagan Stoop, Abbey Cutler, Ginny Pugh and Reese Blackmon all had key hits in the game that drove in runs. Stoop led the way on the mound with eight strikeouts and one earned run on 114 pitches.
The Raiders baseball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end after a 14 – 4 defeat Monday at Lawrence Academy. The Warriors got off to a hot start with four runs in the bottom of the first. Pungo answered with a run in the third, but Lawrence put things out of reach with a five run inning. The Raider bats were rusty coming off Easter break, with just three hits in the game. PCA pitchers struggled to find the strike zone and walked nine Warriors during the game.
Sophomore Evan Woolard leads the Raiders (8-4, 4-1) with a .424 average and 15 runs batted in. He is also 5-0 with a 1.09 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched.
The softball and baseball teams will host Lawrence Academy Thursday. Soccer travels to Lawrence Academy and Oakwood School while hosting Terra Ceia on Friday. Golf traveled to Beechwood Country Club on Tuesday for their final regular season match.
