The Washington High School defense performed at peak efficiency for the second straight week, which gave the offense time to get untracked, in a 32-6 home victory over Pamlico County Friday at Wagner Stadium.

A week after keeping the Kinston Vikings out of the endzone three times in the second half to preserve a 12-7 win, the Pack defense came up with stops that led to all but six of the points Friday night. Several individuals came up with big plays, which helped the defensive unit post the top performance among Beaufort County schools for the second straight week.

Sophomore linebacker Calek Smaw tackled Hurricane players in their own end zone on two first quarter possessions for a 4-0 lead.

Sophomore Khalijal Waltower stopped a PC drive with an interception in the endzone, which set up an 80-yard scoring drive for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Junior Landon Jones recovered a Hurricanes fumble at their own 24 to open the second half, which led to Jerai Davenport’ scoring run two plays later. WHS recovered the ensuing on-side kick that led to a 24-0 advantage. Jones recovered his second fumble and Waltower snagged his second pass to snuff two more potential scoring drives late.

Senior Josh Gordon led the offense with 148 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Davenport posted 114, caught two passes for 41 yards and scored twice as WHS evened its record to 2-2.

Northside: The Panthers couldn’t get their running game going in a 13-0 loss at Rosewood to drop to 2-2. Sophomore Sincere Columbus had 75 of Northside’s 121 yards, while only 19 more yards came through the air.

Senior Dashawn Smith led the defense with 11 tackles, three for loss, while Junior Max Vansant posted 10 tackles and had a 33-yard kickoff return. Senior Landon Buck had a pair of sacks.

Southside: Gates County held the Seahawks (0-4) to 69 rushing yards and 59 passing in a 38-8 win at Southside. Myquan Clark scored the only touchdown on a 53-yard pass from Luke Bullock. Mckyle Sastre led the defense with 5.5 tackles.

Pungo Christian Academy: The Raiders (3-1) erupted for over 350 total yards in their home opening 48-28 rout of Columbia High School in 8-man action.

Key performers included running back/cornerback Quay Artis, who ran for 121 yards on 10 carries that included a 46 yard scoring jaunt. He also intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and deflected a pass.

Fullback/linebacker McKinney Waters ran for a 30-yard touchdown and posted 13 tackles that included a sack and returned an interception six yards for a touchdown. Tight end/nose tackle Evan Woolard caught a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion and recovered a fumble.

Linebacker Parker Byrd made five tackles, two for loss and returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown.
