Hyde County offices and all solid waste convenience sites will be closing at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, due to predicted storm conditions.

A strong cold front will affect our area tomorrow through Wednesday.

Storm prediction’s key points:

Minor to moderate soundside flooding likely Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday, especially for the soundside Outer Banks and the western Pamlico Sound including Pamlico, Pungo, Neuse, and Bay Rivers.

Large surf is expected leading to potential beach erosion and moderate to significant ocean overwash in vulnerable areas. Highest risk late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms Tuesday evening and Tuesday night, with damaging winds and tornadoes possible. 1 to 2 inches of rainfall across most of eastern NC.

Very windy conditions could bring down trees, damage outdoor items, bring at least isolated power outages, and result in hazardous driving conditions for high-profile vehicles. Most vulnerable locations along the Outer Banks and western Pamlico Sound on Tuesday night.

Hyde County Emergency Services will continue to monitor the forecast and issue advisories as appropriate. For the most current and official information visit the latest NWS Morehead City Briefing by going to http://weather.gov/media/mhx/LatestBriefing.pdf
