The Northside girls and boys basketball teams entered Friday’s games at rival Southside in search of victories after losses to Pamlico County and East Carteret to open the Coastal Plains Conference season.
Both left with what they came for as the girls prevailed 56-24 and the boys won 68-43 in the league opener for the host Seahawks.
The Northside girls (12-2, 1-2) led wire to wire behind 21 points from junior guard Olivia Jane (o>J.) Cahoon and 16 from senior Mariah Jones in what coach Michelle Leathers hopes will be a momentum shift for her team.
“It didn’t matter if we were playing our rivals or not, we just needed a win,” Leathers said. “We defended well, pushed the ball and ran our offense, which was just what we needed after two losses to start the conference season. Hopefully, this will get us going in the right direction.”
Junior I’Kiriyah Minor led the Seahawks (10-4, 0-1) with 14 points.
It was more of the same in the boys game, as the Panthers held a 17-10 advantage after the first quarter and steadily built it on in the way to a 68-42 victory. Their biggest lead was 50-29 early in the fourth quarter.
“Our defense stepped up tonight and caused a ton of turnovers, which we converted into points and that was the biggest improvement for us,” coach Jared Adams said. “We had better ball movement on offense and our bench played well. It was good to get a win after the last two games.”
Senior post player Tate Gibbs scored all of his team-high 17 points in the first half, while sophomore Malachi Moore scored all of his 16 in the second half. Sophomore Zi’Mier Alexander added 12 points as the Panthers improved to 12-5 and 1-2 in CPC games.
Junior Joshua Armstrong scored 28 of Southside’s 42 points as they dropped to 2-12 and 0-1.
