Pungo Christian Academy traveled to Merry Hill on Friday to take on the Lawrence Academy Warriors in their lone contest of the week.

The girls game was tied 4-4, before the Lady Warriors went on a 29 – 12 run over the next two quarters to take a commanding lead. PCA rallied in the fourth, but it was too little too late as Lawrence ended Pungo’s four game winning streak, 36 – 29. The Lady Raiders struggled from the field, shooting a season low 18% from the floor and made 11-25 free throws. Allison Sawyer led Pungo with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Ginny Pugh added nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Lady Raiders are now 9 – 7 and 1 – 1 in Tar Heel Athletic Conference games.

In the boys game, the Raiders found themselves down 38 – 24 at the half as they struggled to get anything going on offense and could not stop the Warriors on defense. Everything changed to start the third quarter as Maddox Lee scored a quick 10 points to cut the Raider deficit to just four. PCA took its first lead since early in the first quarter when Lee stole a Warrior pass and found Quay Artis in transition as the Raider faithful erupted. The Warriors responded with a 10 – 5 run to take a 50 – 46 lead going in to the final eight minutes. Pungo completed the comeback with stellar defense in the final period, holding the Warriors to just seven points while scoring 16 to go home with a big conference win with a final score of 62 – 57. Lee led all scorers with 27 points, with 20 of them coming in the second half. Drew Van Staalduinen poured in 17 as the only other Raider in double figures. Austin Garrish was all over the stat sheet for PCA, with eight points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. The Raiders are now 14 – 2 and 2 – 0 in conference play.

The Raiders wrapped up a three game road trip Tuesday at Northeast Academy, then begin a five game homestand this week vs. Mattamuskeet and New Bern Christian.
