Inmate pleads guilty to Death by Distribution

On Oct. 9, 2023, Ashun Anthony, age 24 of Washington, was indicted by a Beaufort County Grand Jury for the crime of Death by Distribution in connection with the April 29, 2022 death of 31-year-old Quintin Freeman who was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center.  Anthony, who was already being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on unrelated drug charges, was served with the True Bill of Indictment and ordered held in the detention center on an additional $150,000 secured bond by the magistrate.

On Feb. 6, 2024, Ashun Anthony pled guilty to Death by Distribution in Beaufort County Superior Court and was given an active sentence of 72 to 99 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.  Anthony was also ordered to pay restitution to the family to cover funeral expenses.
