The Washington High School boys basketball team has the best chance of the county schools to have a first round home game in the state basketball tournament.

The Pam Pack is 19-7 going into Friday’s Eastern Plains Conference tournament at top-seeded Farmville Central. The Jags are 24-1 and have won four of the last five 2A state titles.

Pairings will be announced Saturday afternoon. The 12 2A conference champions get the first 12 seeds based on strength of schedule and other factors. The next four seeds in the 32-team bracket go to the four second-place teams with the highest RPI, which should include the Pam Pack.

They’ve lost twice to Farmville Central and once to 4A South Central (18-3),
Hertford Co. (18-8) in triple-overtime, Southern Wake Academy (19-9), Goldsboro (22-3) and New Hanover (25-0). All but Hertford are conference champions.

“I feel pretty good about getting one home game,” coach David Allewalt. “We could get two if there are upsets, but I’m fine with going on the road. We’ve only lost twice in true road games, so we’re in a good spot.”

The Northside boys (17-9, 5-5) will be on the road throughout the post-season, while Southside’s (3-22) season is over.

On the girls side, Washington is finished for the year after a 2-19 campaign. Northside (18-4) has an outside shot at one home game after finishing behind Pamlico County. The Panthers lost to the Hurricanes twice and 2A East Carteret twice.

Southside (15-10) will be away for the post-season. Go to Saturday evening for first-round pairings.
