Northside senior Mariah Jones was named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association District One first team for the second straight year.

15 players from each of the 12 districts ranging from the coast to the mountains make the first, second and third teams regardless of classification.

Northeastern (Elizabeth City) senior Jasmine Felton repeated as the District One Player of the Year after averaging 27 points a game and leading her team to the third round of the 2A state playoffs.

Jones led the Panthers to a 19-5 record and the second round by averaging 17 points, six rebounds and four assists per game.

“She put herself third behind God and her teammates,” coach Michelle Leathers said. “She could take over a game when we needed her to, but she cared the most about keeping her teammates involved. She had an outstanding four years here and I know she will work hard enough to succeed in college.”

Jones will play at Louisburg Junior College next season after scoring over 1,400 points in her high school career.

“She is very good at taking the ball to the basket, but she can also shoot the three-pointer,” Leathers said. “She started as a freshman for us and did everything I asked her to do while she was here. Louisburg is getting a very coachable player who will help them have success.”

Seniors Michaela Hodge of Northampton Co., Jaliyah Mitchell of Hertford Co. and Camaya Atkins of Northwest Halifax completed the first team.

Players from Gates Co., Bertie, Perquimans, Pamlico Co. and First Flight made up the second and third teams.
