Mrs. DeVere Hodges Jefferson, age 90, a resident of Chocowinity, died Thursday March 21, 2024 at her home.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Monday March 25, 2024 at Hodges Chapel PH Church in Chocowinity and will be officiated by Pastor Ronnie Gurganus.  Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers include William E. Jefferson, III, Robert Jacob Jefferson, Corbin Tyler Jefferson, Dylan Reid Jefferson, Adrian Nottonson, and Lee Gurley.

Mrs. Jefferson was born in Beaufort County on October 16, 1933 to the Late Theodore Robert Hodges and the Late Mary Virginia Hodges. She was a 1951 graduate of Chocowinity High School. Mrs. Jefferson was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She worked as a teacher assistant and reading tutor for 26 years with Beaufort County Schools. After retirement, she worked along-side her husband, Billy Jefferson at Big Bargain Furniture Store until his death in 2021. Mrs. Jefferson was an active member of Hodges Chapel PH Church her entire life where she served in various roles from women’s auxiliary to organist to Sunday school teacher.  She took every opportunity to share God’s love with those around her.  One of her favorite joys was having family over and serving Sunday lunch.  She was an excellent cook!

Survivors include her children, Virginia “Ginger” Leigh Jefferson of Greenville, William “Bill” Earl Jefferson, Jr. (Marletta Poffenberger) of Washington, Jeffrey Hodges Jefferson (Debra Carpenter) of Greenville; grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Nottonson (Adrian), William Earl Jefferson, III, Allegra Michelle Jefferson, Robert Jacob Jefferson (Tesla Jo), Alana Jefferson Ejezie (Ryan), Corbin Tyler Jefferson, Dylan Reid Jefferson; great grandchildren, Paisley Harper Nottonson, Lincoln Claire Nottonson, Remie Charlotte Nottonson, Declyn Rose Nottonson, and Theodore Rider Jefferson.

In addition to her loving husband of 68 years and parents, she is preceded in death by a sister Marlene Hodges Fancher.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2:00 PM until the funeral hour at Hodges Chapel PH Church.  They will also receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and at other times at the home at 700 Carrow Road, Chocowinity.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Frances Wadsworth, Kathy Melton, and other caregivers.
