PCA update: Girls claim undefeated week

Soccer: The Lady Raiders continued their winning ways last week with two conference victories by 5-1 final scores. Ridgecroft and Lawrence were the victims as Julia Rouse had a hat trick (three goals) in the opener. Katie Baxter had a goal and three assists while Lexy Tate also scored. Autumn Gibbs had nine saves in goal.
Rouse led the way at Lawrence Academy with two first half goals, while Baxter netted a pair in the second. Mia Paniagua also scored for PCA.
Gibbs didn’t allow a goal in 55 minutes while Emily Copes gave up a late goal and made a save in her first career action as the goalie, PCA (3-2) travels to Terra Ceia Christian Thursday to finish out play before spring break.

Softball: PCA continued its undefeated start at 7-0 after wins over Mattamuskeet (15-1), Ridgecroft School (6-1) and Arendell Parrott Academy (9-2). Lily Keech picked up the pitching win at Mattamuskeet with six strikeouts and no earned runs in five innings. Anna Stoop pitched two innings, allowed one run and struck out three. Ellakate Hanna led the offense with three hits. Emma Hanna, Sara Gibbs and Reese Blackman each had two hits while Keech, Stoop, Henley Gibbs and Joelie Pair added a hit.
The Raiders rallied to score four in the bottom of the 5th against Ridgecroft and the Rams were unable to respond and PCA would go on to win 6 – 1. Stoop pitched her first complete game with nine strikeouts. Emma Hanna had two hits while Keech, Melanie Rutledge, EllaKate Hanna, and Blackman had one each.
After Arendell Parrott Academy scored two runs in the top of the first, the Lady Raiders responded with nine unanswered runs to take home a 9 – 2 win. Stoop once again went the distance with a career-high 11 strikeouts. PCA had just four hits, one each from Emma Hanna, Lily Keech, EllaKate Hanna and Savannah Pence.

Baseball: PCA went 2 – 2 to even their record at 4 – 4 going into Easter. The Raiders won, 13-3, at Mattamuskeet. Carr Eagles led the offense, going 2-3 with four RBI, including his first career home run. Evan Woolard was 2-3 with an RBI while Bo Spencer, Parker Byrd, McKinney Waters and Wells Eagles also had a hit. Spencer earned the pitching victory with four hitless innings that included seven strikeouts
Pungo scored 15 runs on 14 hits in the first inning for a 25-3 rout of Ridgecroft. Wells Eagles led PCA with three hits and two RBI. Woolard, Austin Garrish, Spencer, Jackson Walker and Luke Alligood had two hits and combined for nine RBI. 12 of the Raiders 13 batters and at least one hit and one RBI. Walker picked up the pitching win with six strikeouts in three innings
On Monday PCA traveled to Kinston to take on Arendell Parrott Academy in a double header. The Patriots blanked the Raiders in the first game, 10 – 0. The Raiders held a 3 – 2 lead in the nightcap going into the final inning before the Patriots rallied to walk off with a 4 – 3 win. The Raiders are off until after Easter break.

Golf and Tennis: The Raiders golf team traveled to Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie for their lone match of the week. Drew Van Staalduinen led PCA with a 52. Harbor Pair shot a 59 and Grant Gibbs shot a 61 to round out the scoring as the Pungo finished fourth in the match. The Raiders will travel to Valley Pine Country Club in Lasker this week for their third match of the season.

The inaugural boys tennis team fell 9 – 0 to Greenfield School as the team continues to improve with experience. Bruce Taylor and Brandon Tooley have formed a solid doubles team that nearly pulled out a win. PCA will travel to Oakwood School April 8th for their next match.
