Washington High School’s wrestling team is number one among teams in the 252 area code according to a website that covers high school sports in North Carolina.

HighSchoolOT.com, owned by Capitol Broadcasting out of Raleigh, ranked the Pack 25th in the state-wide poll regardless of classification and the top team in the 252 area code.

WHS finished the season 32-2 and finished second in the 2A East behind Seaforth HS of Siler City, who finished ninth in the state-wide rankings.

“We’re excited to be recognized as one of the top teams in the state and the best one in our area,” coach Chris Penhollow said. “It’s another step toward where we want to be, which is a team state championship. It’s a credit to the guys and my assistants, including Carl Perry, who did a great job running our practices. Our guys are buying into what we’re asking them to do and hopefully we can be even better next year.”

4A power D.H. Conley was second in the 252 ranking, while New Bern, Croatan and North East Carolina Prep completed the top five. Eastern Plains Conference rivals Ayden-Grifton and North Pitt were eighth and 11th.

3A state champion Eastern Guilford (48-) was the top team in the state, followed by 2A champion Trinity (38-0), 1A titlist Uwharrie Charter (34-1), West Rowan (20-1) and 4A champion Davie County (23-1).
