Panthers take Easter tourney title

Spring break was a time to rest for some county teams while others played on. All schools resume the spring season in earnest beginning Monday.

Baseball: Northside (10-3, 2-0) defeated Lawrence Academy, 2-1 in eight innings, Martin Co, 15-8 and Bertie 13-3 to win the Martin County Easter Tournament at Riverside HS in Williamston earlier this week.
Sophomore catcher Holden Boykin is among the Coastal Plains Conference leaders with a .432 batting average and 12 runs batted in. Senior outfielder Jamie Corprew joins him with a .429 average, 18 hits, 17 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.

Senior Brandon Arthur has been dominant on the mound, with just one earned run allowed with 40 strikeouts in 31 innings for an 0.22 ERA. Junior James Sawyer has a 1.00 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 21 innings. The Panthers host county rival Southside Tuesday, then play at the Seahawks Friday.
Southside (4-5, 1-1) had the week off to prepare for the Panthers. Sophomore catcher Taylor Ashley leads the CPC with a .667 average, while infielder Salil Desai is batting .500. Sophomore Luke Bullock has fanned 23 batters in 17.2 innings.

Washington (0-10, 0-4) has struggled to score runs so far this spring with just 23 in their first 10 games. The Pack is coming off 7-1 and 5-1 losses to Farmville Central this week. Senior Hunter Baldree leads the team with a .312 average while Bryce Williams is hitting .304. Senior Tanner Moore leads the pitching staff with 17 strikeouts and a 3.29 ERA. Pam Pack pitchers walked 47 batters in the first 49 innings.

Softball: Washington (7-3, 2-1) took their first loss in 29 Eastern Plains Conference games, 2-0 to Farmville Central Tuesday night at home. The Pack managed only four hits and committed four errors behind left-hander Emma Orr, who struck out 12 to raise her season total to 127 in 69 innings. She has an 0.91 ERA and leads the offense with a .417 average, three home runs, nine RBI and six doubles. Fellow junior Addison Miller is batting .361, while freshman Honor Edwards is hitting .346.

After starting 8-0, Northside has dropped 3-1 and 7-5 decisions at Bear Grass and Perquimans with a 17-2 rout of Edenton Holmes in the middle for a 9-2 overall record heading into next weeks’ home and home series with Southside.
Senior Taylor Willard leads the Panthers offense with a .567 average, 17 hits and 16 runs scored. Junior Samantha Braddy is batting .500 and is tied with Bella Boykin and Jorden Clark for the team lead in RBI with 12. Jaden Clark is batting .485, while Boykin leads the team with 19 runs scored. She’s also recorded a 1.27 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. Londyn Keech has a 2.06 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 17 innings.

Southside (4-4, 0-2) has the CPC’s leading hitter in senior center fielder Jacqueline Gutierrez (.655) who also leads the team with 19 hits and 14 RBI. Junior shortstop Lily McLean is right behind her at .607 with 17 hits, 16 runs scored and a league-beat 17 stolen bases. Sophomore Carolina Crisp has struck out 34 batters in 20.1 innings pitched.
