Plunkett named Runner of the Year

Washington High School sophomore Keelyn Plunkett had a successful day at the Eastern Plains Conference track and field meet at Greene Central High School Wednesday and was named the conference girls Runner of the Year for her effort.

Plunkett won the 800 meters (2:59.23), the 1600 (7:06.85) and was part of the second place 4x 800 relay team with Hailey Broadwell, Jessica Conner and Elizabeth Barrera.

“She earned her victories through hard work at every practice,” Pam Pack distance coach Dawn Landen said. “She pushes herself during speed work, runs long miles on weekends and enjoys seeing her times improve. It’s great to see her hard work pay off.”

The Pam Pack girls were third behind the host school and North Pitt.

Broadwell won the 3200 in 18:46.94 and was second to Plunkett in the 800 (3:02.08). Conner finished behind Plunkett in the 1600 (7:13.60) and Sary Acosta was second behind Broadwell in the 3200.
Sophomore Janiyah Little was second in the 100 (16.82) and 300 hurdles (52.53), while junior Deaira Hamilton finished third in the 300 hurdles (55.84). Aniyah Gilbert was fourth in the discus (77-07).

The Washington boys finished fifth behind champion Ayden-Grifton.

Senior A.J. Privott led the Pack with a first place finish in the discus (148-06), while Manuel Meza was third in the 3200 (12:41.12), David Barrera took fourth in the 1600 (5:13.93) and senior William McFalling was fourth in the 800 (2:24.16)

Elsewhere, junior Jacob Daniels was fifth in the triple jump (38-01) and eighth in the long jump (18-04). Sophomore Louis Miller finished fifth in the 3200 (13:04.28) and 10th in the 1600 (6:00.22). Jarryn Payne was fifth in the high jump (5-06), Meza was 7th in the 1600 (5:31.82) and Jamel Corry was seventh in the 100 (11.73) and eighth in the 200 meters (24:17).

WHS travels to Kinston for the 2A East regional next week.
