The Northside golf team captured its second straight 1A East regional golf championship in commanding fashion Monday afternoon at the Washington Yacht & Country Club.

The Panthers shot a four-player 18-hole team score of 354, 20 shots ahead of second place Northeast Carolina Prep of Tarboro and 33 in front of third place LeJeune HS.

Panthers senior Gavin Sawyer also repeated as the individual regional champion with a seven over par 79.

“It’s really cool to repeat as team champs and it’s great that Gavin won another individual title,” coach Jared Adams said. “It was a tough day for most of them because there was more pressure than usual. We have learned during the season to have that next man up mentality and that served us well today. When one player wasn’t making shots, somebody else stepped up and kept us going. Max Vansant and Claire Holmes turned in quality rounds today and we would not have won without them.”

Vansant (90), Cooper Evans (92) and Claire Holmes (93) completed Northside’s team score.

The 1A state golf tournament is May 13-14 at Seven Lakes Golf Club in West End.

“That course plays a lot like Cypress Landing, which should help us,” Adams said. “We have the ability to shoot in the low 340’s or high 330’s, which would put us in the hunt. I don’t think we’ve played our best golf as a team yet.”
