WASHINGTON, N.C. — Beaufort County Public Works will host a household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, June 1.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Building 8 parking lot at Beaufort County Community College. The college is located at 5337 U.S. Hwy. 264 East in Washington.

Household hazardous waste material consists of products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients that require special care when being disposed of.

These items are not accepted at the County’s collection sites, and if not disposed of properly, can pose a threat to human health and the environment.

Acceptable items are: latex and/or oil paints (15 gallons maximum), aerosols, fuels, batteries, solvents, propane tanks, cleaners, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs/tubes, mercury thermostats, pesticides (farmers welcome), medications and ammunition.

Commercial waste, explosives, radioactive materials (e.g., smoke detectors), biological waste and motor oil/filters will not be accepted. Contractors and businesses are not permitted to bring items for disposal.

Proof of Beaufort County residency (driver’s license or utility bill) will be required. Items must have their original label or be easily identifiable. Participants should remain in their vehicles unless instructed otherwise. Staff will remove items from vehicles.

The County and/or its contractor reserve the right to refuse waste based on the type of material, material source or because of excessive quantities.

Beaufort County Public Works is holding the collection event in partnership with Republic Services, North Carolina Cooperative Extension, North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and Beaufort County Community College.
