The Washington Whitecaps swim team, coached by Spencer Pake, is at it again, with chance of repeating last year’s championship. Pake is excited about this year’s team which has a total of 85 swimmer on the roster. Practice is held with the beginners from 9 to 9:45 a.m. and the older more experienced swimmers from 9:45 to 11 a.m., five days a week. The kids are working hard and it shows. Pake is assisted by Washington High School graduate Luke Stroud, who was a standout on the WHS swim team.
The Washington Whitecaps swimmers are part of a group that compete with seven other teams in the Greenville Area Summer Swim League (GASSL). These teams consist of six teams from Greenville, one team from Tarboro and the Washington team.
The local team has one home event left for the season and then it’s on to the championship event with all teams being represented. The championship event will be held August 1 in Tarboro. “It’s been a good year and we are looking forward to defending our championship,” Pake said.
