Northside spikes North Pitt|Williamston downs Edenton in opener

The Northside Panthers opened the 2009 volleyball season on a strong note, taking down North Pitt in four games in Tuesday’s season opener.
Coach Tami Wagaman’s Panthers (1-0) posted a 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-12 victory.
“It was good to get that first win so early,” Wagaman said. “There was some sloppy play, but we were able to win it.
“I think this will give the girls some confidence.”
Freshman Jordan Woolard had a solid debut with the Panthers. She finished with 19 service points, including six aces.
Whitney Lewis, a high-flying senior, came up with 14 points and two blocks.
Savanna Boyd added four blocks at the net.
Northside’s junior varsity squad posted a 25-15, 25-18 win.
The Panthers play their home opener Thursday as Columbia heads to town. The match begins at 5:30 p.m.
Tigers roar
Coach Herbie Rogers saw his Williamston Tigers get off to a great start.
Williamston (1-0) cruised to a 25-23, 25-15, 25-8 win at Edenton in the season opener.
Katie Paschal led the way at the net with 12 kills. Meredith Robertson added five kills, while Heather Jackson finished with 11 points.
“It was just what we needed,” Rogers said. “I thought our team played very well. Katie and Meredith did a good job as the outside hitters.”
Williamston’s junior varsity team notched a 25-7, 25-23 victory over the Aces.
Rhonda Manning had eight points. Alex Hardison chipped in with seven points, while Rachel Baker had six kills to lead the team at the net.
The Tigers play their home opener Thursday when North Pitt heads to town.
