It’s been said that it’s not easy being green, but on Friday night Stevie Green made it look real easy has he hauled in two touchdown receptions and ran for another to lead Washington to a 42-0 win over Northside.
The Pam Pack (2-1, Coastal Conference, 3-A) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a Marquest Jackson three-yard run and then blitzed the Panthers (2-1, Four Rivers Conference, 1-A) with a 28-point second quarter to take a commanding 35-0 lead into halftime.
“Northside came out fired up and stopped us a few times, but then after that we were able to get going,” Washington coach Sport Sawyer said.
Washington took a 14-0 lead when quarterback Jimmy Williams connected with Green on a play-action bootleg pass that was good for 32 yards at the 11:01 mark in the second quarter.
After the Washington defense forced a punt, the Pack offense went right back to work as it pieced together an 85-yard drive highlighted by a 36-yard reception by Green that put Washington at the Panthers’ 1-yard line. The Pam Pack scored on the next play as Williams plunged into the end zone to extend the lead to 21-0.

While the Washington offense packed on points, the Pack defense dominated a Northside offense that was playing without starting quarterback Noel Howson, who was sidelined due to a concussion.
“They were just bigger, faster and stronger than us,” Northside coach Keith Boyd said. “Offensively, we just couldn’t get any kind of production or first downs. (Backup quarterback) Malik (Slade) did well but it shrinks your playbook when the guy you have taking 90 percent of your snaps is out.”
Northside fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, giving the Pack possession on the Panthers’ 33-yard line and three plays later Williams hit Green on another play-action pass for a 38-yard score.
“In the second half of last week’s game we started seeing Stevie Green make some plays,” Sawyer said. “He can play some ball. He’s been in the background but he’s stepping up big time.”
Washington added one more score before halftime as the Panthers’ Dazuan Jones picked off a Patrick Thompson pass but fumbled it to hand the Pam Pack a first down at the Northside 48.
Sophomore running back Markell Spencer did the heavy lifting on this drive as he helped grind the ball down to the 2-yard line where sophomore QB Patrick Thompson scored on a keeper to take a 35-0 lead into the break.
At halftime, Washington inducted Bruce Linton, Charles Daniels, Phil Mobley and the 1975 and ’76 basketball teams into the Washington Walk of Fame.
Linton starred on the Pam Pack basketball and tennis teams, while the 1975 and ’76 basketball teams placed second in the state in each year. Daniels, a long-time teacher at Washington High School, aided in the construction of several items that have helped the Pam Pack, while Mobley, the former Washington Recreation Dept. director, helped create a joint use agreement that allowed the rec dept. and the Washington schools to share ball parks.
After the break, the Pam Pack scored one last time as Green ripped off an 18-yard TD run with 1:10 left in the third quarter.
The Pam Pack will be back in action next Friday as it Riverside, while Northside heads into a bye week.
