Sheema Blount, the Pam Pack’s leading scorer, stood at the free throw line and unleashed a foul shot that failed to even come close to the rim before it crashed into the ground.
It was just that kind of night for Washington.
The moment signified the Pack’s contest with Coastal Conference rival D.H. Conley on Friday night as it struggled early and never got off the ground, falling 71-38.
The Vikings opened the game pressing a Pam Pack team that was minus three guards and blitzed Washington with a 20-6 first quarter run to put the game out of reach early.
“We’ve lost three guards since the beginning of the season. Dina Redmond (shoulder), Lacie Anglim (knee) and Shayla Midgette hurt her ankle in the last game so our rotation was changed and we had a hard time adjusting to the pressure,” Washington coach Allison Jones said.
The Vikings poured it on early, forcing Washington into careless turnovers, which were converted into buckets on the other end.
D.H. Conley finished the game with 12 players recording points and was led by Kristina Howard’s 17 points and Lavivica Wilson’s 15.
The Pam Pack was led Blount, who scored 14 points, while Alana Jefferson added seven.
The Vikings backed off the press in the second quarter but Washington still stumbled and at one point drew a needless 10-second violation when it failed to get the ball across the halfcourt line despite not being pressed. Once the Pack got into its halfcourt offense it was able to produce some points, but points would prove hard to come by for the better part of the night.
“We just didn’t play smart basketball tonight,” Jones said. “We stopped looking for our shot from our perimeter players, we made poor decisions and we forced too many passes and we just didn’t play a very physical game.”
The Pam Pack (4-10, 2-3) will look to rebound on Friday when it plays at West Carteret.
