For the 12th year in a row the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex with play host to the annual Bobby Andrews Scholarship softball tournament today as the action is slated to tee off at 8 a.m.
The tournament will feature seven teams in the 10U and 14U category and will begin with the scholarship presentation.
The Bobby Andrews Scholarship awards approximately $900 to those that wish to attend Beaufort Community College and $500 for those that choose to go elsewhere and this year’s recipients are April Cherry Bullock (BCC), Brandi Hardison (BCC), Morgan Rae Williams (BCC) Brittney Alligood (ECU) Faith Benson (Fayetteville State), Justyce McKissick (PCC).
To qualify for the scholarship players must participate in the Washington Girls Fastpitch Softball League for at least for years and meet a certain GPA.
The tournament was the brainchild of former Washington Girls Softball League coach Manuel Howsley, who created the scholarship in the name of Andrews in honor of his dedication to the sport.
Andrews, whose name has become synonymous with Washington softball, said it’s a pleasure to hand out scholarships to the young athletes.
“It’s hard to put into words what this means to me,” Andrews said. “But, it’s great to be able to help these kids be able to go to college and get an education. It just means so much to me.
“God left me here to help children that need it and I’ve done that and I’m there for them when they need me and it means a lot to me.”
