Northside High School needed a challenge, and Pamlico provided it Wednesday.
The Hurricanes handed the hosting Panthers their first volleyball defeat of the season 3-1 Wednesday evening at Northside. Pamlico (3-0) won the first game 25-22, and the second 27-25. Northside (2-1) came back to win the third 25-19, but Pamlico finished off the series with a 25-15 victory.
Tiffany Jackson led the Panthers with four kills. Lauren Rodriquez had 10 assists and Lauren Fletcher had three kills.
The Panthers were coming off a conference win the night before against Plymouth. They won 25-12, 25-19 and 25-6. They defeated Washington in the season opener.
Northside held a 21-19 lead at one point in the first game, but Pamlico came back to win 25-22. In the second game Pamlico ran up an 11-5 lead but some kills by Jackson and Fletcher helped keep the Panthers in the game.
In the third game, Northside turned it around and held the lead for the most part, scoring five points with Jackson serving.
In the final game the Hurricanes lead by 11-4 at one point, but the Panthers were still able to hold on until the end.
“I was happy with how well my girls stepped up to it, but we still have work to do,” Wagaman said. “There are still places that we’re leaving open and we’re not hitting all the time.”
Wagaman had some high points.
The Northside jayvees won the early contest 2-0.
