Essie Gertrude Wiggins Floyd

Essie Gertrude Wiggins Floyd, age 94, a resident of U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014. There will be a celebration of her life at 11 a.m., Monday, May 26, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service officiated by Pastor Ron Bousquet. Special music will be provided by Kim Bousquet. Burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Monday, May 26 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Hwy 264 E., Washington, NC and other times at the home of Audrey and Jerrell Wilson, 221 Dogwood Dr., Pamlico Village, Washington, NC.

Mrs. Floyd was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Chicod, NC, daughter of the late John and Mealie Fornes Wiggins. She was married to Henry Floyd, Jr. on Feb. 1, 1942, who preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 1976. Mrs. Floyd retired from National Spinning after 35 years of service. She was a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II. Mrs. Floyd was a member of The River Church, Bath, NC.

Mrs. Floyd is survived by her son, Mike Floyd of Washington; her daughter, Joan F. Whichard of Washington; her grandchildren, Brian Floyd of Bath, Adrienne Floyd of Boone, Allena Hale of Washington, Thelma Sue Floyd of Winston-Salem, Scott Floyd and wife Carol of Ohio, Daniel Floyd and wife Randi of Ohio, Crystal Floyd of Washington, Christina Floyd of Washington, Heather Floyd of NY, Jerrell Wilson and wife Audrey of Washington, Eric Wilson and wife Michele of Bath and Shawn and wife Shawna of Kelso, WA; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, James, Bobby, Durwood and Conway; and her siblings, Bessie Wiggins, Mettie Wiggins, Sally Wiggins, William Wiggins, Laura W. Wiggins, John Albert Wiggins, Roy Clifton Wiggins, Herman Wiggins, Earl Wiggins, and Elmer Wiggins.
