Seahawks drop opener to North Duplin

A lack of ball security and a few mental lapses down the stretch cost the Seahawks their opener against North Duplin.

The Rebels powered their way to an early two-score lead in the first quarter via two run plays. However, the Seahawks answered with three touchdowns, including a Lawrence Brown run and 45-yard pass from quarterback Johnny Sullivan to Donald Moore to give Southside a 22-14 lead. Senior Raquan Moore also found his way into the end zone after recovering a fumble and returning it 15 yards.

For the remainder of the contest, Southside’s offense was silenced, as North Duplin tacked on four more TDs to put the game out of reach.

Brown finished with 50 yards rushing on the night, while juniors Dylan Lewis and Matthew Baxter notched 60 yards on the ground a piece.

“We have to get better. We have to get in better shaped and more disciplined,” said head coach Jeff Carrow. “We had opportunities to win the ball game. We moved the ball, but we had a few mistakes in key positions and a late fumble inside the five in the fourth quarter down 14.”

Southside will seek redemption in its home opener next week when the team faces off against Rosewood.
