BELHAVEN — After more than four years, Belhaven Town Clerk Jeanne Budge will step down from her position at the end of August.

Budge said she made the decision to spend more time with her family, as her three children’s schedules can be difficult to balance with work.

“Their schedules are getting more packed,” she said.

The Town officially posted the vacancy Aug.9, and is now accepting applications for the position in the hopes of finding someone to fill the spot soon.

“They’re slowly trickling in,” Budge said of applications. “I tried to give them a little extra time.”

To apply, those interested must have a high school diploma or GED, with at least five years of office experience, according to the Town’s website. If chosen, an applicant must be prepared for some potential traveling related to the certification process.

A town clerk’s responsibilities include: drafting minutes for town council meetings, preparing meeting agendas and sending them out, maintaining town records, handling legal ads, maintaining use agreements for town property and assisting the town manager, among others.

Town Manager Woody Jarvis said he only has praise reserved for Budge. He said Budge helped him settle into his position upon being hired a year ago.

“She’s awesome to work with, and we’re going to miss her,” Jarvis said. “She helped me get my feet on the ground and has helped keep me straight.”

Budge said she may pursue another job in the future, but for now, she will focus on her family.

“I don’t look forward to being without her,” Jarvis added.
