Mary “Peggy” Whitley Purser

On Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007 there was a “homecoming” in heaven. Peggy Purser went to be with her Lord and Savior. She was 87 years young, born on Feb. 22, 1920.
She was her family’s encourager and set a high standard for us to follow. Through her life, she has touched many people. She loved unconditionally.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Owen &husband Frank Owen, Stepdaughters: Helen Mayes, Faye McDaniels, Lib Gilliam, Sisters-in-law, Irma Tingle, Audrey Purser, and Brother in law, Harvey Arthur Purser, grandchildren: Michael &Lisa Rice, James &Maria Rice, Sheri &Michael Martin, Stepgrandchildren: Scott &Bonita Owen, Gary &Ellen Owen, Greg Owen, Lori &David Hunnings, Todd &Anglea Owen; The love of her life her great grandchildren of whom there were 22, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Alonza &Claudia Fodrey, her brother and two sisters, an infant son, her first husband, Murray James Whitley and second husband Vaughn Ormel Purser.
First and foremost she loved her Church, Rock of Zion FWB, serving as organist. She was a member of the Degree of Pocohontas for 53 years, once active in Bayboro Chapter of Eastern Star 26 years.
As she was a cancer survivor, Relay for Life was one of her loves. As a strong woman of faith she also was a supporter of The Gideons International. Being legally blind for 17 years she supported the Lions organization for the blind.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Bryan and Rev. David Pierce officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. The family will receive friends at Bryant Funeral Home 7-8 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the home of her daughter, Peggy Owens, 1733 Hwy. 306 N., Grantsboro.
Flowers are welcome but those who prefer are asked to make memorial donations to The Gideons International, the Lions Club or Relay for Life.
