The Unity Christian Academy softball team extended its two-year winning streak to 22 games after three commanding wins last week, defeating its opponents, Bethel Christian Academy, Pungo Christian Academy and Albemarle School, by a combined score of 47-5.

Unity began the week by beating Bethel Christian 16-0 on Tuesday and Pungo Christian 15-5 on Thursday, both at home, before traveling to Elizabeth City on Friday, where the Warriors emerged victorious over Albemarle School 16-0.

Tuesday’s game against the Trojans was Unity’s first in two weeks, due to spring break and rain postponing games, but the Warriors showed no signs of rust. A nine-run explosion in the bottom of the first quickly put the game out of reach. Grace Bumpass’s grand slam in the first was the highlight of the opening inning. The sophomore shortstop ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate.

Macy Main picked up the complete game victory, facing only 17 batters in the five-inning game. She struck out seven batters as she won her fifth game of the season.

Thursday’s game against Pungo Christian saw Unity show it can come from behind as well. Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, the Warriors blew the game open with a 10-run outburst.

Senior catcher Kaley Coltrain and sophomore second baseman/outfielder Casey Micchelli, who hit a two-run home run and a grand slam respectively, led the offensive onslaught in the fourth.

Unity took its show on the road on Friday. Playing as the away team didn’t stop the Warriors from repeating the feat of scoring 10 runs in the fourth, but this time Albemarle School was the unfortunate team to feel their wrath. Bumpass, who hit 4-for-4, and freshman utility player Lilly Wallace, 3-for-4 at the plate, led the charge for Unity.

Main pitched her second complete game of the week. She struck out six batters and walked one, improving her record to 6-0.

The Warriors, now 9-0 this season, will next host Wayne Christian tomorrow.
